I/we used Lucas , or Chevron red grease . I was going to take the time to clean all the factory stuff out ; and , try some Cat branded heavy duty hydraulic hammer grease but never did. I never saw any extended bearing life from adding extra grease . Bearings are one of life's many "uncertains"...I have seen cheap ones last one ride (100 +/- miles) , and I have seen them go close to 1k miles . I have also had Yamaha's fail in as little as 500 , and last as long as 1500.

I believe the amount of grease issue is limited by the contact patch between the ball and the race. Any more is just a potential to hold heat at the race face and if too hot over the design, the grease runs out and its all over for the bearing. Only thing worse than heat is dirt. Cleaning and fresh grease is all about roller bearings and the contact face is so much larger and the proper preload allows so much longer wear. Like EZ-lube Dexter trailer axles. But the factory design with the axles requiring 250 pounds torque in hub and all that requires the solid seating of the inner races, which gives us ball bearings and small contact. Trying to think about the tooling in the limited sizes of SxS hubs and getting roller bearings is obviously not financially feasible. So the factories have designed in the major maintenance factor for the Bearings. Rant over- thanks!

What i did was take the seals out of the bearings completely and drilled and tapped the hub out and put a grease fitting in the hub so every time i grease the bushings i pump some in the bearings as well but understand where i ride is nothing but mud and water and the outside seals arent doing there job because the axle where the seal rides is worn out so they kept filling up with water and rusting out so this was the only fix for me and yes the bearings had barely anything in it almost nothing as far as i was concerned

Still Shakin' the Cage
we've always used Lubriplate lithium-based grease on ink roller end bearings. the rollers have spun at 12,000 rpm for about 4-6 hours a day for 25+ years.
it dries and forms a seal around the outside of the dust cover. never had a problem with excess heat.
water getting into the cage will ruin any bearing.
