I know this has been talked about before but im looking to add a switch for my cooling fan so i can turn it on when i want an still have it work like factory as well. Can i put a switch to the temp senser on the rad.? I know if u cross the plug the fan will turn on so will this work the way im thinking?

I assume you have a 660 stroked to 720? If it is indeed a 660, then yes, all you have to do is put a switch across the thermo-switch on the radiator. You will want a 15 Amp or more rated switch and use at least 16 gauge wire (14 ga to be super safe).

The 700 are different, in that there is no thermo-switch on the radiator. The ECU senses temperature and triggers a relay on those machines. There you can put the switch across the relay contacts to do the same thing.

Yes its a 660 based rhino. Thanks for the info steves i was hoping you would chime in thanks! Ill have to look again but i think i bought a 15 or 20 amp switch. 12 gauge wire be ok for this?

Oversized wire never hurts anything electrically. It's just mechanically a bit harder to work with and route around than need be.

If your switch has a light on it and you wire it like this the light on the switch will come on when the fan comes on even if the switch is off. Just let's ya no when the fan is on. Kinda nice to no.

Yeah that makes for an interesting setup. Tyrap first came up with that arrangement long ago. It can be a bit confusing, because the switch needs to be wired in backward from the conventional way (normal use of that switch is for the light to be on all of the time such that you can find it in the dark). Reversing the 'supply' and 'load' terminals puts the bulb on the fan side, so the light comes on whenever the fan is powered up.

There is yet another nifty setup where you can disable the fan altogether when you are about to go into really deep water, such that the fan motor does not get stalled under power and potentially overheated. This one also allows you to deliberately have the fan on or to have it run automatically as well. This one is a bit more complicated but comes with more lights to stare at :-)

I have the setup that SteveS showed in his second drawing. In fact he drew it up for me. I have a DPDT Center off switch that if I flip up turns the fan on all the time. In the middle the fan runs just as in stock. When flipped down the fan is shut off. The advantage is I have a pretty bright RED LED that comes on if I shut the fan completely off for creek crossings. That way you don't accidentally forget to turn it back on. When the fan is switched always on or when the fan runs normally the green light is on. This set up has worked perfectly for me.

wont be able to turn it off....to much risk in forgetting to turn it back on...if you run it before the mud hole it will be cool and shut off when you turn it off

Bright lights a'binking and a'flashing you in the face takes away the boredom of riding around. People will pay good money for that! LOL

With the 700 they handle the fan control a bit differently than the 660 and 450. The temperature sensor is a low power sensor in the head water jacket. The engine control electronics trips a high power relay when it gets too hot. You can just wire a switch across the contacts of that relay just like you would with the 660's radiator thermoswitch.

Wow, I'm always too full after a big dinner to do anything at all.... :-)

Good 'nuff, glad that is working the way you want.
