Starter relay buzzing

typically a relay is just a simple magnet that when powered with the small amps on the key circuit, pulls a bridge to connect the ends of the two cables. So the relay has got to have a good ground in addition good connection from the key circuit. If the relay power/ground is not good it may vibrate. Sometimes they can hang-up internally as they are wearing out and tapping with a tool while trying to start may jar it lose.

Good points. The relay coil gets grounded by the ignition keyswitch when it is in the start position. The other side of the coil gets voltage applied when the transmission is in neutral and/or when the brake lights are lit up with the key switch in the run (and start) positions.

Already did the tapping and ground checking.
He jumped across and it cranked just a couple of times. My guess is bad battery.
