I've been following the latest on the RZR 100 and RZR Turbo fire hazard and safety recall notices. I do not believe the fires are due to gasoline being hauled in the bed. I see this cited time and time again, but I feel pretty strongly this is not the root cause.

I know that Polaris has had problems with their RZR voltage regulators. They malfunction in a way that generates a lot of heat either inside the regulator or within the weather pack connector. There was even a recall on the recalled voltage regulator parts. The 2016 RZR Turbo models were recalled because of an oil line connection that could spray oil onto the exhaust and cause a flash fire. There were even problems with kinked and/or improperly routed fuel tank vent lines that could cause a buildup of pressure in the fuel tank and then spray on hot engine parts causing a flash fire.

There have even been a handful of reports of burnt Ranger 900 XP machines due to poor heat shielding around the exhaust.

The fact remains that the Polaris fire issue is serious. I won't even joke about it because people have been seriously hurt and even killed. When plastic catches on fire, it burns fast. A driver and passengers have precious little time to exit the vehicle. Children secured in the rear seats of a "crew" model with harnesses would be a nightmare situation. We are talking about plastic machines that become engulfed in flames within a matter of seconds.

This latest report of a RZR fire was supposedly of a new machine with very few miles, and it would have had all the safety recalls completed (if it was indeed purchased as new). If a "pop" was heard right before the flames were seen, what could it have been? An oil line or fuel line rupturing? Was it electronic capacitors getting hot enough to burst? Maybe the wire to the starter getting chaffed and shorting out?

I hope Polaris gets this sorted out.
