The 2017 Nitto King of the Hammer endurance UTV, sponsored by Can-Am, started at 8 am on Wednesday the 8th of February.
75 UTV teams signed up to compete in 115 miles what is known as one of the most difficult and challenging racing competitions known in the US. Johnson Valley is where Hammer town is located, the hub of the event where vendors, race teams, pit crews, camps and spectators gather for the week long event of jeep, truck, UTV and dirt bike racing occurs.

The terrain of the course consists of deep sand, giant ruts, miles of whoops, G-outs and above all, boulders and rocks. The first lap is a 60 miles long desert loop that separates the competition apart from each other. A quarter of the field tends to break down at this point.

The second loop holds the toughest sections of the race which are mountains of boulders and rock gardens that involves the copilots to get out and help direct the driver through, often times teams use winches to get up sections of the course.

Around 1pm the race leader came through the finish line with over a 15 minute lead. Shannon Cambell #5 and his copilot drove their Polaris RZR to the number one spot with his son Wayland Cambell finishing in second place and Jon Crowley taking the third spot on the podium.
After the podium finishers came through, the race was all about finishing. This year 37 out of 75 teams finished the race. Two years ago only 7 competitors completed the race, which shows how far the technology has come for these machines.
