    Crate motor

Who’s got a Viking motor kickin around from a build that is just taking up space. Dreaded middle drive put a crack in my case.

Exploring options. Yamaha reliability tried and true quality.

Yamaha should have corrected that problem as long as the 686 has been in production

It almost got mine too. Noticed a noise and spedo not working on de-acceleration.

Glad I rebuilt mine before it happened to me too. Was always playing in the back of my mind. Where and when? Sad to hear of your troubles. Cheers

Is this a problem with all years of the Viking? Got a 2015 and thought there was mention of it having been addressed for that model year and on.

Following that, does somebody have a link to a page with instructions on how to check for and fix?

Yes mine is a 15 and had backed out when we tore my motor down. You can check them if you pull the output yoke but you have to split the cases to fix it. One way to see if it’s going out is to look at the bottom of your motor where the cases meet and see if there is oil seeping out

I can’t fathom how common this is.
So basically when someone buys a new Viking they should be justified in having the dealer pull the motor and split the cases.
Should definitely spread the awareness here as Yamaha is touted as a true and reliable manufacturer.
I can assure you I didn’t buy a Viking for its power plant and would have considered other options if I’d known otherwise!

it just doesn't happen to each and every engine but it should have been corrected I agree. many people go thousands of miles with no issues
