    Yamaha front drive shaft fix

Ryan's front drive shaft with 35s and portals is starting to slip so we cut one apart to see how it worked and came up with a fix now we're going to test it.

I like the pin vs welding it. That way you still have a weak link that is cheap. And, if it needs a little more, you could maybe throw another in there beside it.

Kind of like a shear pin on a boat prop? Sounds like a good idea over welding.

I think it's a press fit, so it only slips if it's under a real bad load. My guess is after a few times it gets wore down and it's done.

The idea of a shear pin is rational but the implementation may be a challenge to find the correct values if you want it to be the weak link. The shear pins I have seen are on a low HP motor and are brass or a weaker material that is designed to be a quick failure to save a shaft and maybe the prop. If you're willing to risk the diff then use a solid pin. But the torque of a 50 HP/1400 lb machine seems challenging to find a fine line between max application vs saving diff gear teeth or CVs.

exactly! that's why testing is paramount. you know James won't tolerate it if it doesn't perform as required. testing takes time, so everyone be patient and you will have a quality product in the end.
