Yamaha had some issues with the 708, mostly running hot from what I know. Not all of them but enough to discontinue production. My understanding is that Subaru built the engines for Yamaha.

High oil consumption because of faulty machining of the cylinders seems to be somewhat of a problem too.
Yamaha now owns controlling interest in that Subaru manufacturing company since last quarter of 2017.
So it looks to me like they could just fix the problems and go onward.

The problem is the oil pump gear is not keyed like it used to be on the older Motors and it's coming loose and spinning on the shaft and they're losing oil pressure

they also had problems with air box design it was allowing dust through causing top end damage and there was also a problem with the valves I believe.
