Launched in 2016, the Yamaha YXZ quickly established itself as one of the best pure-sports side-by-sides in the industry. Its naturally aspirated engine develops around 115 HP. That puts it shoulder to shoulder with the Polaris RZR XP engine. Excluding turbocharged models, only Arctic Cat offers more power with the 130 hp Wildcat XX. Ironically, itís a Yamaha engine that powers the Wildcat XX.
Over the past 8 years, the Yamaha YXZ has seen a few improvements here and there, but for 2024, the improvements go much further!
Targeted Objectives

Naturally, Yamaha had a plan in mind before undertaking the changes that were made to the YXZ in 2024.
This plan was to stem from the following objectives:

  • Maintain the YXZ identity
  • Extend the feeling of a direct connection between the machine and the driver.
  • Optimize lowóand high-speed performance
  • Optimize rider and passenger comfort

Improved 6-speed transmission

First of all, itís important to remember that the optimum power band for the Yamaha YXZ engine is between 7,000 and 10,500 RPM. Keeping the engine within this power band results in a more interesting performance.

This is especially true when shifting gears. For example, when accelerating during a gear change, the engine falls below 7,000 RPM. This gives the impression that the engine is hesitating or cramming. On the other hand, if you stay above 7,000 RPM, youíll be able to fully feel and appreciate the efficiency of this acceleration.
Low-speed driving

Another point that YXZ drivers expressed was that keeping the vehicle at very low speeds in excessively rough terrain was difficult. Some improvements had been made in 2019, but this only partially improved the situation.

More consistent gear shifts

Fortunately, for 2024, the transmission gear ratios have been revised to offer greater consistency between gear changes. In addition, the transmission has been upgraded from 5 to 6 gears. This means smaller gaps between gears.
As a result, the first gear ratio has been reduced by 40% compared with the 2023 model. This will make it easier to operate the vehicle at very low speeds. Adding an extra gear to the transmission will enable more even gaps between each of the gears. Staying within the engineís optimum power band during acceleration will be easier.
On the face of it, going from a 5-gear to a 6-gear transmission would suggest a higher top speed, but thatís not the case. Thatís what weíve learned from Yamaha.
Less Vibration

Yamaha will also be adding rubber bushes to the transmission mount. The main purpose of the bushes is to reduce shock and noise during gear changes.
To maximize the transmissionís durability and reliability, Yamaha has increased oil capacity and flow. In addition, cooling fins have been added to keep the transmissionís operating temperature within acceptable limits.
YCC-Só New Automatic Shifting Technology

This system offers 3 shift modes:

  • Gives control to the driver.
  • For sportier or more aggressive driving.

Sport Auto

  • Automatic gear changes.
  • Optimization of sporty gear changes.
  • For sportier or more aggressive driving.


  • Gear changes are automatic but smoother.
  • Keeps RPM lower.
  • Increases comfort (mainly for the passenger).
  • For less aggressive driving.

This system is reminiscent of the D-Mode found in the RMAX family. However, the YCC-S acts primarily on gear changes, optimizing their timing.
How does the YCC-S work?

The YCC-S takes into account several parameters, such as engine RPM and accelerator pedal position. This helps determine the ideal gear for the selected mode.
The YCC-S calibration considers the results of many tests carried out by different types of drivers in multiple types of terrain. Weíre talking sand dunes, closed circuits, deserts, mud, trails and moreÖ

As a result, the YCC-S delivers optimal gear changes, whatever the terrain. Yamaha has thought of purists by offering a Sport mode that allows them to deactivate automatic gear changes. So, thereís something for every YXZ rider!
Launch Control

Fans of quick starts will be pleased to learn that the YCC-S system offers Launch Control on the 6-speed transmission. The big difference is that this is done on second gear instead of first. Indeed, as the ratio of first gear is 40% lower on this new transmission, it is not suitable for such spirited starts.
New Charging System

Side-by-side vehicle owners often equip their vehicles with numerous accessories. Many of these optional extras require a great deal of electrical power.
YXZ owners are no exception to this trend. Yamaha has therefore increased the total electrical power level from 472 W to 1,000 W. As a result, the power available for accessories has been increased from 15A to 35A.
This sums up the main changes Yamaha has made to the YXZ family for 2024. Itís safe to say that this is the biggest upgrade the manufacturer has made to its models since their introduction over 8 years ago.
